The reason for the reverse flag?  Flags placed on vehicles such as ground vehicles, ships, aircraft and spacecraft are properly marked with the blue-star field displayed towards the front of the vehicle. This allows the flag to appear to be blowing in the wind as the vehicle travels forward. It is a long standing tradition dating back to the cavalry and infantry units charging ahead  If the flag were not reversed on the right hand side, the vehicle would appear to be retreating if the blue field was placed aft.  

If you walk to the right side of an aircraft, you will notice the blue field is always facing forward.
