The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark was one of the most advanced and controversial aircraft of the Cold War era. First flying in 1964, it pioneered variable-sweep wing technology and terrain-following radar, allowing it to penetrate enemy defenses at low level and supersonic speed — day or night, in any weather.
It saw combat in Vietnam (Operation Linebacker II), and most famously in Operation El Dorado Canyon — the 1986 US strike on Libya, launched from bases in the UK after France refused overflight rights, requiring a grueling 6,400-mile round trip.
The F-111 was retired by the USAF in 1996, but continued flying with the Royal Australian Air Force until 2010. Loved by her crews, feared by her enemies — the Aardvark earned her motto: Peace the Old Fashioned Way.
