 The Invertible F-14 Tomcat Decal - With its swept wings and twin-tail is a US Naval Interceptor which rose to an iconic level during its service, and like all Grumman aircraft before her, she carried a feline name. The name, "Tomcat", was partially chosen to pay tribute to Admiral Thomas Connolly (Admiral Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air Warfare) as the nickname, "Tom's Cat", had already been widely used by the manufacturer. In the end, the name stuck.

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat first flew on December 21, 1970, and went on to become the US Navy's premier carrier-based air superiority fighter for over three decades. With its variable-sweep wing, twin tails, and AWG-9 radar capable of tracking 24 targets simultaneously, the Tomcat was built to dominate the skies over the fleet.

Armed with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile — with a range exceeding 100 miles — the F-14 was the only aircraft in the world capable of firing it. From the skies over Vietnam and Iran to the streets of Hollywood in Top Gun, the Tomcat earned its place in aviation legend before its retirement in 2006.

The F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy’s primary carrier-based air superiority fighter from 1974 to 2006. Built by Grumman, the Tomcat featured variable-sweep wings, a two-man crew, and the AWG-9 weapons system capable of tracking 24 targets simultaneously and engaging six with AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. It flew combat missions from the skies over Libya to the Persian Gulf and became one of the most recognized fighter aircraft in history.

Retired in 2006, the Tomcat remains the standard by which carrier fighters are measured.

VX-4 Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Four, (AIRTEVRON FOUR), commonly referred to by its nickname of The Evaluators, was a United States Navy air test and evaluation squadron based at Naval Air Station Point Mugu, California. Their tail code was XF, and they flew the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, Grumman F-14 Tomcat and the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet until their disestablishment in 1994.

The United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (SFTI program), more popularly known as Top Gun, is a United States Navy training program that teaches air combat maneuvering tactics and techniques to selected naval aviators and naval flight officers, who return to their operating units as surrogate instructors.

The program began as the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, established on 3 March 1969, at the former Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.

The Board of Inquiry determined that the F-14's departure from controlled flight was induced by the disruption of air flow into the starboard engine.This disruption stalled the engine, which produced enough yaw rate to induce a spin Which was unrecoverable. There was no way the pilot could see or avoid the jetwash.

The pilot's record was cleared, and was restored to flight status without further delay.

October 4th 2006, the very last flight of an F-14 Tomcat in U.S. service took place when a lone F-14D of VF-31 departed from NAS Oceana for Republic Airport on Long Island, New York. The birthplace of the famous feline.

All remaining intact F-14s in the U.S. were flown to and stored at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group "Boneyard", at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. And as a final act of political stupidity and disrespect to one of the finest aircraft ever to take to the skies, as of 2007, the swing wing movie star fleet defending feline was to be unceremoniously shredded to prevent any components from being acquired by Iran.

US lawmakers are moving to preserve a handful of Grumman F-14 Tomcat fighters retired by the US Navy (USN) 20 years ago through a proposed legislation titled “Maverick Act" that seeks to authorize the USN to transfer three mothballed F-14s to the US Space & Rocket Center

The Maverick Act, named after the famed pilot who kept writing checks his body couldn't cash, may very well allow three F-14 Tomcats bearing USN bureau numbers 164341, 164602 and 159437 to be restored and possibly two to fully operational flight condition.
