The 222 Prototype

August 13th 1976; The first flight of the Bell 222 light commercial twin-turbine helicopter. The prototype was the first design to incorporate twin turbine, dual hydraulic and electrical systems, and sponsons housing a retractable landing gear, and received full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration on August 16th, 1979

January 22nd, 1984; an advanced prototype variant of the 222 helicopter with stealth capabilities under development by the Central Intelligence Agency was stolen during a planned prototype live fire demonstration by the programs chief test pilot, Charles Henry Moffet.

The Bell 222 achieved great success as a civilian helicopter the world over, but sadly the one of a kind CIA stealth prototype was never recovered, and the entire program was dissolved shortly thereafter.
